Killing ME Softly…Part III

Posted by apostlepd on November 15, 2007

A QUIET DEATH. I feel like I’m almost to the brink of a great discovery here. After much thought and tons of discussion, I have finally realized what is going on in the world. God is getting killed, softly. I know how it’s happening, too. With the release of the Golden Compass, everyone is outraged at the idea that a movie would come out and say it kills God. To some, this is an outrage and just the thought of it makes them boil with anger towards the writer and producers of the movie, even though the movie itself won’t have many anti-God themes in it in order to appeal to a broader audience. However, the loud cry of the Christians against the Golden Compass is causing such a distraction, we’re missing the real danger here. God has been getting killed for years-decades-and we haven’t done anything about it. Why? “Because the things that have been ‘killing me softly’ have been ignored.” (That is a possible response from God.)

A REVIVAL? If the release of The Golden Compass started a revival of Christians fighting against everything that was “Killing God” in our world, wouldn’t that be a gift from God! Unfortunately, the movie is just getting Christians upset that someone has come out and said they were “killing God.” But what if this idea of “killing God” really woke Christians up to what is happening all around us? What if we realized that God is getting killed softly and started pointing it out to other believers? What if we started acknowledging the movies out there that kill God by their messages of homosexuality being normal, premarital sex being mandatory, abhorrent violence and gore being “entertainment,” ear-piercing vulgarities being funny or necessary, and their disrespect for the other standards God has established-WHAT if we stopped accepting, supporting, and ignoring the things of this world that kill God everyday? Would it make a difference? Would it cause a REVIVAL?

IGNORANCE IS STUPID. I hate it when people go to see a movie and say they were shocked by the content or didn’t know what was going to be in it. With the internet these days, that just isn’t a good excuse. With the addition of explanations of ratings directly underneath the “R” or “PG-13″ (in the little box that’s hard to read), you can no longer go to a movie and not know what’s in it. Furthermore, to say that the content of a movie or song doesn’t impact your spirituality or affect you in any way is simply wrong. For more on that, read my last blog on “Did you read the label?” Obviously, some things will affect you more than others, however, every anti-God message you absorb will have some impact on your spirituality; it will “kill God” softly and slowly. The more messages you absorb, the more dead God becomes. Being ignorant of what you’re putting yourself in contact with is not an option. It’s like going to a restaurant and letting your server pick your dinner-when you get it, you eat it up-and then end up in the hospital because you were allergic to it.

THINK=IT CHANGES THINGS. As Christians, we need to approach life with a different perspective than the world. We can’t just go around like the theater or iTunes is an “all you can eat” buffet. Look at the amount of anti-God messages that are in something and THINK: Is this going to be something that brings me closer to God, has no effect on me, or pulls me away from God? (The things that will have no effect on you would be Cars, Aladdin, Cinderella, things Rated G.) I guarantee you that if you’re struggling in your spiritual life with keeping your focus on God and following in the steps of Jesus, you very well may be “killing God” by your choices throughout the week. All it takes is a little thought, not much effort, and things will change.

ARE YOU KILLING GOD? So ask yourself one question, “Do you feel lucky punk, well, do ya?” Honestly, do you feel lucky when it comes to things that kill God? Are you going to continue to rationalize it and say, “I’m not going to see that for the nudity, but for the PLOT” or “Violence doesn’t affect me. I can take it” or whatever you say when you know something is wrong with the movie you’re about to see, but you want to see it anyway? Why do we yell and scream when a movie comes out that says it’s about “killing God” but pay no attention to the movies that are really and truly and literally KILLING GOD in our spiritual lives, in our churches, and in our families? I’m not worried about The Golden Compass turning our American Youth into atheists. I’m worried about kids whose parents let them see Rated R movies, surf the internet unsupervised, or listen to music by Soulja Boy…”but it’s got a good beat!”

REMEMBER: “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.” “…you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” “To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.”

Those who have ears to hear, let them hear! Yes and Amen.

Honestly, I still just don’t get how a movie can do this much harm. I do understand you to a point, but how can we be “killing God” when God is strong in our hearts everyday. I see these movies and it really does not change who I am. … Mainly, I don’t agree with your approach to the other movies that “kill god”. I do have your same views on some of the content of these movies, but I feel like by trying to stop these movies it just causes more hate in the world. Personally, when I try to show somebody God’s way, I do it with love and kindness. After what I’ve heard from other Christians about The Golden Compass, many do not seem to want to do it that way. There is so much anger and accusation over this movie, and I feel like that will bring us no closer to our goal. I would love to change the world for the better, but honestly, is that going to happen? … I think we should be allowed to see these things because even the most fantastical movies have life lessons rooted into them. Then afterwards, we teach that not all of the ideals presented in the movie are things somebody should do. …

How can you say something like that? God has a plan for each and every one of us and who is to say if we are to change the world or not? God has the only say. As Christians it should be a goal for us to change the world. One doesn’t have to influence the world during their life, but ones death can make a profound impact on the world when others view how he/she lived and what they stood for. Do you remember Rachel Scott, the first girl killed in the Columbine High School schooting? She is a perfect example of this. To understand her story more go to the website http://www.rachelschallenge.com/FriendsofRachelExecutiveClub/tabid/1808/Default.aspx and find out more and what her goals were to change the world.

I fail to understand how we are killing God? God cannot die. If anything we are slowly killing ourselves. Just as evolutionists believe in survival of the fittest and that life is “improving” (for lack of a better word), I believe the opposite. Since Adam first sinned and original sin came into the picture, humanity is growing further and further away from Christ and is devolving.

    Bravo.
I applaud you for this well thought out response to our society. This and your views on seeing The Golden Compass are both very well-written. I completely agree with you that we need to stand up against the immorality that is present in the media today, and that even mild innuendo and subtle connotations can have a great affect on our faith (not that it will take it away, but that they can weaken it/encourage us to compromise our morals). I still haven’t decided whether I will see The Golden Compass, since there seem to be benefits to both sides of the coin. I think the main reason I wouldn’t go to see the movie is b/c the fact of the matter is that my money will be supporting people who produce this anti-Christ material. However, like I said, I haven’t fully decided (especially after reading your essay). So even though I may not see the movie, either because I decide that it’s healthier for my spiritual walk or just because I don’t want to spend 8.50, I just wanted to encourage you and let you know that I agree with you (since it seems like you’ve been faced with a lot of opposition). It’s refreshing to see that there are sincere and mature Christians out there who have the time to give their insight on topics like these :) . God bless.

I think that you have a very good point, especially on how there is nothing wrong with going to see the movie. The only thing that I believe you are mistaken on is homosexuality being viewed as normal as a bad thing. Even if the Bible says that it is wrong, that doesn’t always mean it is. If I recall correctly, working on Sunday, eating crab, and women wearing pants were all punishable by death. Yet many people today do things like that. Why do people get to pick and choose what to follow in the Bible?

Love is a beautiful thing, regardless of the gender of the people in love. Just because homosexuality isn’t “normal” or the majority, doesn’t make it wrong. Left-handed people aren’t “normal”, should we start treating them differently now too? You’re a very intelligent and insightful person, and I feel like you have a good heart. It just hurts to see that you are able to transcend the masses and realize that there is nothing wrong with seeing that movie, but you are still unable to get past the discrimnatory belief of looking down on homosexuals.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts in an intelligent way. I agree with every single thing you said and have been teaching it to young people my whole adult life. I wish there were more adult Christians out there willing to put their entertainment at the foot of the cross and lead the next generations by their courageous example. Only in America do we have to reach so far to find an area in which to sacrifice something for our faith. Shame on us! Are we so spoiled that we can’t show a grateful heart to God by standing firm in our society for the things that represent His heart, so as to bring Him glory? And turn away from the things that don’t. We’re giving our world and community a mixed message when we say what we believe is wrong and then watch those exact same things for entertainment. Like just because we’re not doing it, that makes it funny or exciting…and okay. I honestly believe that entertainment in American society has become our greatest enemy, it is stealing truth from the hearts of our children, its numbing our consciences, and slowly robbing us of a true sense of what it means to live a Godly life. Yes, I pray for revival. I pray for uncompromising brothers and sisters, willing to stand firm…and for ones like you who are willing to get a message out of truth regardless of the negative feedback. God bless you! as I’m sure He already has. :)

Yes indeed, ignorance is stupid. Which is exactly why you should take the time to read the books fully and understand what they are about, instead of suggesting that the books are about killing God. They’re not. Many people have assumed this because they’ve been told so by sources who have been told so by others who have been told … etc etc. Please, if you want to make an honest statement about the trilogy, take the time to understand it first. Don’t rely on what other people are saying, because most of the negative summaries of the novels sound as though their authors have read a synopsis from Wikipedia and jumped to rather hasty conclusions. If you don’t want to let Pullman make money from you, dont’ buy the books. Go read them in a library. Then make up your mind on whether they are immoral.
Having said that, I think it’s great that you’ve taken the time to analyse the world around you. It can only be a good thing that people, regardless of religious belief, are trying to make sense of their world, so please don’t think I’m having a go at you, because I’m not :)

Paul, thanks for your thought-provoking response. God indeed is slowly being blotted out of our society in a variety of ways including the media. Of course the movie is not outwardly athiest much like the Chronicles of Narnia were not outwardly Christian especially on a superficial level, but Pullman is an outspoken athiest who believes his mission is to teach children to be athiests (his other movie “Why Athiest” is a classroom program to teach 11 year-olds athiesm [an oxymoron meaning belief in not believing]) So under the guise of fiction Pullman is slowly introducing his idealogies while targeting children, a population he admitably loathes. I realize the 1st movie is barely athiestic, but it will get you started on the slipery slope. Although not as deadly to Christian adults who have developed reason as most other movies, these movies can, and indeed are made to, teach children that having faith in God is non-sensical and will only hurt you and that you ought to do what you know is bad. As I said, I don’t think the movie will shake any reasoning person’s faith, however children are very impressionable and will imitate anything they see (I remember always running out into the yard and having stick sword fights after watching some hero cartoons as a child).
To go along with what you are saying, our minds are like machines. We run on what we put into it. If we feed it things not ordered toward what is good and beautiful, we shouldn’t be surprised that that which our mind produces is not good and beautiful either. Or to put it another way, if we were eating brownies and the cook said, “oh don’t worry, I only put a little dog poop in there”, we would gag and stop eating. Therefore, adults shouldn’t watch degrading R rated movies and parents should make sure what their children see is wholesome. I don’t think the movie will produce a generation of athiests by any means, but it can plant a seed that could increase doubt in the future. I don’t agree that all things “brings me closer to God, has no effect on me, or pulls me away from God”, but rather that if you’re not growing closer to God you are growing away and everything has an effect to some extent or another(Cars, Aladin etc. have enjoyable humor and can bring families together so they are mildly building up the kingdom of God rather than tearing it down). A Christian can’t remain stagnant. Therefore, although there are other things to avoid, noone should financially support The Golden Compass or allow children to watch that which will not build up the kingdom of God.
